Which island is your favourite one for the next vacation? Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera have a lot more to offer than just good weather.
Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest Canary island. Several picturesque towns along the coast and in the heartland are worth a visit and around the entire island you can find lovely beaches for a splendid day. Formative for this island is the steep Mount Teide in the heartland of the island which is highest mountain in Spain. The Teide and other mountains such as the Anaga or Teno mountain range are proof of the volcanic origin of Tenerife and create a unique landscape which one should not miss out on discovering.
Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is situated east of Tenerife and is known for its circular form. Here there is also high volcanic massive in the inland of the island that has created an impressive natural spectacles such as the Roque Nublo or Badama Crater and splendid panoramic views. Around the island there are a number of lovely beaches on Gran Canaria where you can laze or go for a swim in the deep blue ocean. Along the south coast in places such as Maspalomas und Playa del Inglés there is quite a lively nightlife. On the northern part of the island it is far more tranquil – here those seeking relaxation and recuperation will be happy.
Lanzarote
Lanzarote is the most north eastern Canary Island. The dark lava ash which characterises this island is the clearest example of the volcanic origin of the Canary Island. Timanfaya National Park is a volcanic area created by a major eruption in 1730 with the landscape resembling the moon. Here you can see many volcanoes and craters which will give you the opportunity to explore the issue of volcanism on several discovery tours. The barren island completely covered in volcanic has its own specific charms which are worth exploring. Whilst the north is quieter the south around the capital Arrecife and other towns have a range of recreational facilities and many beautiful beaches.
Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is situated just a few kilometres south off Lanzarote and is known as a Mecca for wind and kite surfers. Particularly along the east coast there are a lot of beautiful beaches which are some of the best on the Canaries and offers both bathing guests and water sport fans a range of possibilities. At Corralejo in addition to this the wide dune landscape and many idyllic villages and towns enchant and the main town Puerto del Rosario is also worth visit. Beyond this Fuerteventura is the largest cultivable area for aloe vera and on a guided tour you can learn something about the secrets of this plant – including a sample of the plant on your skin.
La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro
... are situated in westerly direction of the Canary archipelago. La Palma is nearly as big as Lanzarote. La Gomera and El Hierro are the smallest islands of the Canaries. Their seclusion doesn’t make them less enticing in respect to their landscape. Here there are many lovely beaches and a number of interesting places where one can linger and unwind in one of the many cafés or tapas bars. Else those who are seeking peace and relaxation as well as looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the larger islands will particularly appreciate these islands. There is also a vibrant nightlife on the western islands of the archipelago though clearly quieter and more authentic.
